VACAVILLE EARNS 13TH SAC-JOAQUIN SECTION WRESTLING TITLE
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
STOCKTON -- Tyler Johnson and Hudson Buck won individual titles to lead team champion Vacaville High School at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament at Stockton Arena.
"Those are hard to win," Vacaville co-head coach Clint Birch said of the blue section pennant senior Ben Holmes was holding as proud parents were snapping team photos from the stands.
"This is our 13th banner and they're all very special."
Holmes did his share of the heavy lifting -- he took fourth place at 215 pounds -- on the mat for the Bulldogs, who racked up 171 team points over two pressure-packed days of wrestling Friday and Saturday.
Vacaville has won four straight section titles and seven of the past nine (Turlock won in 2004 and Ponderosa in 2006).
Birch, who is co-head coach along with Tim Adam Wight, explained why the Bulldogs have been so successful.
"In order to win at Masters, you have to have team depth -- a lot of good kids -- but you also have to have superstars," Birch said. "As a coach, to put both on the mat gives a lot of satisfaction."
Those superstars would be Johnson, Buck, Adam Delagarza and Holmes, all of whom are ranked in the state by thecaliforniawrestler.com.
Johnson is No. 1 at 145 pounds, Buck is No. 8 at 171s, Delagarza is No. 4 at 189s and Holmes is No. 6 at 215s.
Johnson and Buck both buzzed through the competition, combining for five pins, two technical falls and one major decision in their eight matches leading up to the finals. Once there, Johnson earned an 11-1 major decision against Calaveras' Tyler Brown and Buck earned a 6-2 decision against Oakdale's A.C. Brown.
Delagarza also made it to the finals, but he was stunned by Lyndell Scarr of Ponderosa. Delagarza went for a takedown and then Scarr sprawled and secured a far cradle, which he used to turn and pin Delagarza in 46 seconds.
As for Holmes, he suffered a 5-3 loss against Gary Gellerman of Calaveras in the quarterfinals at the end of Day 1. That left Holmes with the unenviable task of having to win two more matches on Day 2 to ensure a trip to the CIF State Championships on March 5-6 in Bakersfield.
Holmes was able to do that, winning three in a row before falling in the third-place match to Malique Micenheimer of McNair.
Kasey Klaus also had a long road to travel for a trip to state, winning three consolation matches himself before losing to Bella Vista's Victor Trujillo in the 103-pound consolation quarterfinals. But Klaus earned a pin 26 seconds into the second round of his seventh-place match against Merced's Meng Xiong to secure the seventh and final spot to the state meet.
Steve Brazet finished fourth at 152s, giving Vacaville six wrestlers heading to Bakersfield.
Runner-up Elk Grove, which finished with 146 points, was led by 112-pound champion Martin Ramirez and will take five wrestlers to state.
Oakdale, which finished third with 137 points, was led by 130-pound champion Shane Tate and will take six wrestlers to state.
Ponderosa was the only other team with over 100 points, led by back-to-back champions Scarr at 189s and Paul Buchanan at 215s. Ponderosa advanced five wrestlers to the state meet at Rabobank Arena.

UNHERALDED FERRY SENDS CENTRAL CATHOLIC SIBLINGS TO CIF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
STOCKTON -- David Ferry was practically giddy. He should've been -- a trip to the CIF State Wrestling Championships was just earned.
No, not his. His brother's.
That would be Cameron Ferry, one of Central Catholic High's most unlikely of state qualifiers ... well, based on last week's results.
At the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V meet the previous weekend in Hilmar, Cameron Ferry barely earned a trip to this weekend's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament with a fifth-place finish when only five wrestlers advanced.
But on Friday at Masters, Cameron Ferry put himself in the running for an individual championship.
The senior, an Honorable Mention at 135 pounds by thecaliforniawrestler.com, opened the day by advancing via forfeit because his opponent didn't make weight.
In Round 2, Cameron Ferry breezed to a 10-0 major decision against Escalon's Adrian Cortes.
But then would come his first test, a matchup against Ceres' Tony Spinella, a senior ranked No. 8 in the section, in the quarterfinals.
The score was tied 5-5 through three periods. A spot in the semifinals, assuring at worst a sixth-place finish which, since the Sac-Joaquin Section sends seven wrestlers per weight class to state, means a date in Bakersfield was in one wrestler's future.
In the 1-minute overtime, Cameron was able to secure the takedown at the edge of the circle, prompting a display of emotion from David so great you'd almost think he earned a trip to state.
Well, David did actually, is was just a little bit earlier with his 6-2 victory against Del Oro's Dylan Blomgren in the quarterfinals at 135s.
David Ferry, though, was expected to make the semis. The junior is the top-ranked wrestler in the section and the fourth-ranked wrestler in the state (technically he's now No. 3 since Bella Vista standout Jake Briggs, ranked No. 1 at 135s, is wrestling at 140s this postseason). David Ferry even came to Stockton Arena as the two-time SJS D-V champion.
But it's almost as if it didn't matter, as if he'd trade it all as he proclaimed "My brother's going to state!" to anyone within an earshot.
And that's how it goes at these tournaments.
So much on the line. A takedown in overtime can be the biggest thing in the world.
For the loser of the championship quarterfinals, a matchup in the consolation bracket fourth round awaits.
A win in your next match keeps you in the running. A loss in the ensuing consolation quarterfinals, and you're in the seventh-place match with a 50-50 shot at state -- the loser in that pressure-packed of matches suffers a similar fate as the fourth-place finisher in the Olympics.
The Ferry Brothers, Steven Widmer (125s) and Ben Martinez (152s) are in the semifinals, but Central Catholic's other five wrestlers who advanced to Masters all were eliminated. That puts the Raiders at fifth in the team standings with 62.0 points.
Vacaville leads with 98.5 points. The Bulldogs brought 13 wrestlers out of 14 weight classes to Masters and 10 will be wrestling Saturday.
Tyler Johnson (145s), Hudson Buck (171s) and Adam Delagarza (189s) advanced to the championship semifinals with seven still alive in the consolation bracket.
Elk Grove (81 points) is in second place and will vie for the team title with three wrestlers in the semifinals and five in the consolation bracket.
Oakdale (71) is in third with four in the semis and two in consolations.
Ponderosa (70) is in fourth with two in the semis and four in the consolations.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the fourth round of consolation matches. Championship semifinals are set to begin at 10:15 a.m.; the third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches at 1 p.m.; and the championship at 3:30 p.m.
TEAM STANDINGS (THROUGH CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINALS AND CONSOLATION THIRD ROUND, TOP 20 ONLY)
1. Vacaville 98.5; 2. Elk Grove 81.0; 3. Oakdale 71.0; 4. Ponderosa 70.0; 5. Central Catholic 62.0; 6. Del Oro 55.5; 7. Sheldon 54.5; 8. Bella Vista 53.5; 9. Calaveras 53.0; 10. Nevada Union 48.0
11. Oak Ridge 46.0; 12. Rodriquez 40.0; T13. Folsom, McNair 39.0; 15. Turlock 37.0; 16. Los Banos 36.0; 17. Union Mine 33.0; T18. Escalon, Grace Davis 31.0; 20. Summerville 30.5

Sac-Joaquin Section D-V wrestling (2-20-10) : CENTRAL CATHOLIC CONTINUES RUN OF SECTION TITLES TO FOUR
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
HILMAR -- Central Catholic High won its fourth straight Sac-Joaquin Section Division V wrestling title Saturday, but unlike the past three seasons this one would come down to the wire as runner-up Calaveras made things interesting with a strong showing.
Central Catholic's 8.5-point victory, 209.5 to 201.0, was the narrowest in the Raiders' run of four straight titles.
"Eight and a half points, yeah, it was a close one," Central Catholic coach Steve Strange said.
In Strange's seven years with the Raiders, his teams have gone fifth, second, second and then first the past four years.
"I think the ones we had second were real close, maybe 10 to 15 points," Strange said, "but this was the closest we've won -- the first three years we've had a little leeway at the end."
And in the end, it was Central Catholic that finished with a flurry.
With 14 wrestlers advancing to the D-V meet, nine Raiders made it to the medal round with eight of them winning their finales.
All four Raiders wrestling for third-fourth (Kris Zizzo) and fifth-sixth (Devon Kelly, Cameron Ferry and Kyle Martinez) won.
The only loss in the final round was Tanner Feuerstein, and that was by just one point, 6-5, in the 119-pound championship vs. Escalon's Christian Franks.
And then there were Central Catholic's four individual champions.
Abel Caliz was the first to secure a title in a thriller in the 112-pound final, scoring a takedown in the final 2 seconds to deny Carlos Diaz of host Hilmar a section title in his gym with a 3-1 victory.
But that wasn't the only nailbiter.
At 125s, Central Catholic's Steven Widmer and Calaveras' Brenden Sullivan were tied at 6-6 through three rounds. Then in the 1-minute overtime, starting in the neutral position, the two stayed on their feet until the final 10 seconds. In an akward, side-by-side position Sullivan looked to have the upper-hand and was awarded a takedown as the Calaveras faithful started calling for "two" and cheering an apparent victory.
But the Raiders coaching staff immediately appealed, and after the two officials deliberated the takedown was waived off and the final 2 seconds of OT ticked off to send action into 2OT.
"I kind of was surprised because I didn't think it was a takedown," Widmer said. "They gave him the two, and then they started talking about it."
After choosing the down position, Sullivan earned an escape to go ahead 7-6.
Now with his choice for the next 30-second round, Widmer earned a quick reversal to take an 8-7 lead with about 20 seconds remaining.
With Sullivan frantically trying to earn the escape to tie the score, Widmer managed to maintain control for the triple-overtime victory.
"I was just trying to hold on, don't let him up again," said Widmer, a senior who also won the D-V title last season by just one point. "When he got up I had to lift him and bring him back down again."
David Ferry (135s) and Ben Martinez (152s) were able to earn titles with less drama, earning respective 13-4 and 12-3 major decisions.
The Raiders now take some momentum, and nine wrestlers, to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament from Feb. 26-27 at Stockton Arena in Stockton.
David Ferry will be looking for a shot at redemption.
Ranked No. 1 in the section by thecaliforniawrestler.com heading into last year's Masters Tournament, David Ferry slid all the way to fifth. He was able to turn things around at state, earning a medal in eighth, but it was the Masters title that eluded him.
"Last year I'd come out nervous," the junior who started wrestling at age 4 said. "I didn't have confidence in myself even though I knew I was one of the best there."
His strategy this season?
"Wrestle like I do in the wrestling room," he said, "relax, and do what you know you can do."
Widmer, ranked No. 7 in the Sac-Joaquin Section, hopes to get one of the seven spots the section gets for the CIF State Championships in two weeks in Bakersfield.
"You never know where everyone's at," Widmer said of the Masters brackets. "You gotta beat whoever you end up with and wrestler your best every match."

Pitman at Los Banos Boys BB (Varsity) on 2-19-10 : Editor's note: The SJS Division II brackets were released Sunday, and Pitman did indeed secure the No. 12 seed. The Pride will face No. 5 Jesuit-Carmichael at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

WIN BOOSTS PITMAN'S PLAYOFF CHANCES; LOS BANOS COACH NAMED NEXT AD
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
LOS BANOS -- Pitman High earned a 54-47 victory at Los Banos in both teams' regular season finale Friday night, giving the Pride boys basketball team a much-needed boost in its chances for one of the 16 Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff spots.
"I think we're in the 16," said Pitman coach Harvey Marable, whose team was at No. 13 in the D-II power rankings released Tuesday. "We can go with this win; maybe move up to 12. We'll find out Sunday."
Seniors Dominic Romeo scored 19 points and Derek Nidey 18 to lead the Pride (16-11 overall, 7-5 Central California Conference), who had put itself in a precarious position with losses in its three previous games.
Pitman also found itself in a tightly contested game well into the third quarter of Los Banos' Senior Night.
Eric Gutierrez kept Los Banos even with Pitman at 32-32 with a putback after his second consecutive offensive rebound with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter.
But, Pitman went on a hot streak to close out the third.
Nidey, a sharpshooter who entered the game hitting 33 of 77 3-pointers (43%) this season, nailed a 3 with about 1:30 left in the quarter.
Then Romeo -- Pitman's best big man at 6 foot, 6 inches and 245 pounds -- scored three points the old-fashioned way, putting the Pride up 38-32 with 57 seconds remaining in the third.
But Romeo and the Pride weren't done for the quarter as Romeo put in an easy layup off a deft pass for a 40-32 advantage going into the final quarter.
"I think in the third quarter we did a good job of finishing and not having empty possessions," Marable said. "We've had a lot of empty possessions."
Pitman extended it's lead to 11 points, the largest margin of the evening, on 1 of 2 free throws from Joseph Madden to make it 47-36 with 3:48 left in the game.
Guard Tyler Simmons helped the Tigers close quickly with a pair of baskets via a layup off an assist in the lane by Jerrell Minor and then a shot just inside the 3-point arc from the left wing.
Gutierrez continued the comeback bid with a pair of free throws after stealing the ball and getting fouled on a layup, bringing Los Banos within 6 at 48-42 with 2:18 remaining.
Romeo again showed his prowess in the paint, getting another putback with 1:20 remaining to get the Pride back up by 8 at 50-42.
Los Banos' Erik Martin cut the deficit to 5 with a 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining, but 50-45 and then 52-47 on a highlight reel layup by Javelle Beasley with 39 seconds left was as close as the Tigers (5-20, 1-11) would get on their Senior Night.
A pre-game ceremony honored the nine seniors on the boys basketball team and the senior cheerleaders.
In addition to Beasley, Simmons, Gutierrez, Martin and Minor, other Los Banos seniors honored included Max Ornelas, Mario Eguia, Ryley Zimmer and Darrel Begonia.
After the Senior Night ceremony, Los Banos athletic director Gary Caropreso was recognized for his service heading the program and it was announced he will retire as AD at the end of this school year. Los Banos boys basketball coach Joe Barcellos was announced as the new AD for the upcoming school year.
"I found out on Tuesday," Barcellos said.
And that leads to a new question: Will Barcellos coach next season?
"That's still up in the air," he said, "kind of a wait and see on that one."

CCC wrestling (Varsity medal round) on 2-11-10 : LOS BANOS EARNS FIRST CCC WRESTLING TITLE
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
TURLOCK – Los Banos will be a divided city next school year.
Yes, Los Banos no longer will be a Tiger-only Town when classes resume for the 2010-11 year. There will be a new high school, Pacheco High, that will start splitting up the student body.
As a result, the one-and-only Los Banos High will go from a large school slotted by the California Interscholastic Federation in Division I to a small Division IV school with a campus full of Pacheco Panthers about a mile away.
Membership in the Central California Conference will change, too, putting Los Banos in the Western Athletic Conference. So the Tigers decided since this is their last hurrah, they might as well make the most of it at the CCC championships Thursday at Turlock High.
Sparked by individual champions Edduardo Madriz, Greg Hartman and Manuel LeFevre, Los Banos posted 206.5 points to edge runner-up Pitman-Turlock (202 points), earning the Tigers their first CCC title in their last season in the foreseeable future with the conference.
"A lot of firsts this year," first-year Los Banos coach Josh Adams said after he learned the Tigers won the team title. "We beat Turlock for the first time this year."
That's saying a lot, seeing as Turlock has had a virtual lock on the CCC for the past decade.
And then, to win the CCC title?
"Huge," Adams said, "this is big for our school and our community."
Madriz, a junior who was CCC runner-up last year, was the first Tiger to exit the mat as a CCC champion this season, earning a decision against Merced's Jovanny Gonzalez in the 130-pound final. Hartman followed Madriz three finals later, taking the 145-pound title via technical fall against Turlock's Erick Parsons.
And don't forget Lefevre going for gold two matches later at 160s.
"Manuel LeFevre was big," Adams said. "LeFevre tends to give a takedown in the first round."
And the Los Banos senior did in this final, a pivotal one against Pitman's Aaron Manley.
"After that, I didn't give up," Lefevre said. "I got the escape, took him down and rode him out to win 3-2."
LeFevre's win gave the Tigers vital team points in their race to the top against the Pride.
Still, things were looking neck-and-neck down the stretch as Pitman had its share of top finishers.
Andrew Perez and Robert Vasquez already had won CCC titles in back-to-back matches at 135s and 140s.
Then the Pride knocked 'em down with three titles in a row from Gustavo Verver (189s), Jaime Lemus (215s) and even a win by fall from Pablo Guerrero (285s).
But Los Banos' big men also came up, well, big, winning three of the final four third-place matches. And, just as Guerrero did, Andres Quintero earned a pin in the 285-pound third-place match to give Los Banos four team points (two placement points and two bonus points for the fall) for the icing on the cake.
“Our big guys came through,” Adams said.
Quintero even had to wait a while longer to get his shot as teammate Robert Escobedo went into triple overtime in his 215-pound final.
With 30 seconds put on the clock for 3OT and in the down position, Escobedo switched for a reversal as soon as the referee blew the whistle for another clutch Los Banos victory.
“This momentum takes us into divisions,” Adams said of the Division I South tournament Feb. 19-20 at Lincoln-Stockton. “Our league is the toughest going into divisions. We’ve got a real good shot at winning divisions – that’s a blue banner.”
And just as a CCC team title sets up the Tigers for a bid at the D-I South championship, an individual CCC title is a solid way to kick off a march to the CIF State Championships.
“Yes, it gives you lots of confidence,” Lefevre said.
Even Golden Valley-Merced’s Joey Allen, who had a bloody forehead after a loss in the 171-pound final against Buhach Colony-Atwater’s Jeremy Coane, has his eyes on a much bigger objective.
“It would be nice to make it to state,” Allen said.
But getting through the divisional round and then the Masters Tournament won’t be easy for anybody. Not in a Sac-Joaquin Section that continuously produces elite wrestlers.
“If I get to sections it’ll be tough there,” said Escobedo, a senior who also got third in the CCC last season. “It’s tough. It’s Masters. But you gotta do what you gotta do.”
FINAL TEAM STANDINGS
1. Los Banos 206.5; 2. Pitman-Turlock 202; 3. Golden Valley-Merced 178; T4. Turlock 172.5; T4. Buhach Colony-Atwater 172.5; 6. Merced 105; 7. Atwater 68.5
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP-MATCH RESULTS (Wrestlers were given a 2-pound weight allowance)
103: Garrett Fortado (Turlock) decisions Kendal Klette (Los Banos); 112: Ben Weber (Golden Valley) pins Jose Zuniga (Turlock); 119: Fabian Garcia (Turlock) technical falls Jorge Munoz (Los Banos); 125: Brandon Egleston (Turlock) decisions Derrick Avila (Pitman); 130: Edduardo Madriz (Los Banos) decisions Jovanny Gonzalez (Merced); 135: Andrew Perez (Pitman) major decisions Edgard Curiel (Buhach Colony); 140: Robert Vasquez (Pitman) decisions Antonio Guizar (Golden Valley); 145: Greg Hartman (Los Banos) technical falls Erick Parsons (Turlock); 152: Aaron Osmer (Buhach Colony) major decisions Daniel Gonzalez (Golden Valley); 160: Manuel LeFevre (Los Banos) decisions Aaron Manley (Pitman); 171: Jeremy Coane (Buhach Colony) decisions Joey Allen (Golden Valley); 189: Gustavo Verver (Pitman) decisions Luis Bojorquez (Buhach Colony); 215: Jaime Lemus (Pitman) major decisions William Sanchez (Golden Valley); 285: Pablo Guerrero (Pitman) pins Jacob Stewart (Turlock).

Rumble in the Jungle VI (medal round) on 1-30-2010 : GRANITE BAY YOUTH RULES RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE VI
By Delton Lowery
LoweryDigitalPhoto.com
TURLOCK -- There was a lot of green at Saturday's high school wrestling tournament.
It was, after all, called the Rumble in the Jungle.
Of course there was Pitman-Turlock's green and silver. The Pride was the host to 28 schools.
There also were Grace Davis-Modesto's green, Hilmar's green, Sonora's green, Liberty-Madera Ranchos' green and even the green letters on the silver singlets for Manteca.
But the most dominant green of the day was Granite Bay's. Call it Grizzlies Green.
The Grizzlies powered their way to the Rumble in the Jungle VI title with 200.5 points, 24 clear of runner-up Golden Valley-Merced.
Grizzlies Green also was manifested in Granite Bay's roster, which sports only two seniors. The Grizzles had two individual champions, but they were freshman Johnny Cooley and sophomore Gavin Andrews.
They might be green, a little wet behind the ears if you will, but they're no slouches on the mat.
Cooley, unseeded in the 135-pound bracket, opened with a pin of Turlock's Gerardo Garza in 5:32; then a pin of Sierra-Manteca's Austin Soto, seeded third, in 5:16; then a 14-10 decision against Golden Valley's Javier Luque, seeded second; before finishing it off with a wild 18-17 victory against San Leandro's Abel Robles, seeded fourth, in the championship match.
Andrews, seeded third in the 285-pound bracket, breezed to the finals with pins in 2:45, 1:55 and 3:49 before locking up with top-seeded Dakota Smith of Yosemite-Oakhurst in the final. There, Andrews and Smith were knotted at 2-2 through three rounds and Andrews took Smith down in the 1-minute overtime period for a 4-2 decision to cap Granite Bay's performance.
"It's a really young group, only two seniors in the lineup," said Granite Bay coach Mike Lynch, who has coached the team since the school opened in 1996. "We've got a really good bunch of kids, they work hard, have good chemistry and they're doing well."
And, they're improving.
With just two seniors and three juniors to go with a whopping five sophomores, three freshman and a hole at 140s, Granite Bay was able to make amends for an earlier runner-up finish.
"We got second at the Grizzly Invitational," Lynch said. "Golden Valley won our tournament."
The Cougars tried their best to win the Rumble, too, with Ben Weber earning the 112-pound title, and Austin Bondi (119s) and Antonio Guizar (140s) taking second place.
Granite Bay also had two runners-up, sophomore Adam Wagner (145s) and senior Carson Schmidley (152s), both of which lost to No. 1 seeds.
Third through fifth was close with Turlock taking third with 129.5 points, Grace Davis fourth with 121.5 and Pitman fifth with 117.5.
The Rumble in the Jungle also gave teams an opportunity to put out its junior varsity wrestlers in four novice divisions.
Grace Davis finished first in the JV standings with Golden Valley finishing second.

Mid Cal wrestling tournament (Championships) on 1-23-10 : VACAVILLE MAKES SOME NOISE AT MID CALS

GILROY -- Vacaville won the two-day Mid Cals wrestling tournament Saturday, riding three individual champions to a resounding victory that might get the rest of the state to take note of the Bulldogs.
"This is where we take off," Vacaville co-head coach Clint Birch said. "I think we've been underrated all year."
And if the Bulldogs have been underrated -- they're ranked 10th in the state by thecaliforniawrestler.com -- the same might as well be said for Tyler Johnson after what he did this weekend.
Johnson, ranked No. 5 at 145 pounds, earned a stunning 12-8 victory in the 152-pound final against Cody Rodebaugh, the defending state champion and top-ranked 145-pounder from San Lorenzo Valley-Felton.
"Tyler beat a defending state champion," Birch said, "but that doesn't mean he's the state champ."
The Bulldogs don't think they're the state champs either, but they have had what it takes to rise to that level, winning the 2007 CIF State Championships.
"We've been there, we know what it takes and we'll do whatever it takes to get there again," Birch said. "Clovis and Poway are right there but the 'Dogs want the trophy, too."
Adam Delagarza (189s) and Ben Holmes (215s) also won individual championships for Vacaville.
Tournament host Gilroy finished second with 249 points. The Mustangs were led by individual champions Jesse Delgado (125s), Willie Fox (130s), Blake Kastl (135s) and Dominic Kastl (150s). Luis Barragan made it five Gilroy wrestlers in the finals, but he lost 3-1 in the 285-pound finals to Orry Elor of College Park-Pleasant Hill.
Madera South scored 188.5 points to edge Selma (187 points) for third. Pitman-Turlock rounded out the top five with 179 points.
